New tool aims to slash waste generated by commercial sector
The latest addition to BRE’s suite of SMARTWaste tools, SMARTWaste® Commercial, was launched at the Resource, Efficiency and Waste Management Solutions (RWM) exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham earlier today
The new web-based waste measurement tool will support building owners, occupants and facility managers in better understanding, managing, reporting and reducing commercial waste arising from buildings which is estimated to be 24 million tonnes per annum.
With the cost of this waste representing as much as 5% of a company’s turnover, the tool is being launched at a critical time for the sector where profit margins are increasingly reliant on a reduced cost base.
Applicable to all types of commercial buildings including offices, hotels, retail, schools, health care and leisure, SMARTWaste Commercial is compatible with the BREEAM-In-Use standard for existing commercial stock.
It will deliver many benefits to users including
- Consistent and accurate reporting of waste arising from commercial buildings
- Reduction of waste costs and waste sent to landfill
- Provision of a single ‘Waste Performance Rating’ that scores overall waste management of a building, similar to an EPC
- Management of a company’s whole building portfolio with the ability to compare waste performance across buildings
