Alberta demonstrates dedication to life safety

Alberta Fire & Security Equipment Ltd has become the first company to achieve LPCB approval to LPS 1148 (Design, Installation, Commissioning and Servicing of Automatic Sprinkler Systems for overseas installers).

A properly designed and installed automatic sprinkler system can safeguard life, property and the environment. As equipment designs and system configurations for automatic sprinklers are continuously evolving, system installers need an appropriate level of technical competency in both design and installation in order to ensure adequate protection.

Charles Camilleri, Executive Manager, Engineering for Alberta said, “Alberta feels that quality in fire safety is something which is improving all the time and one way to ensure this quality is to seek third party certification of the systems through companies like LPCB.”

He added: “Approval to LPS 1148 is already required by some insurers and is recommended by others. Alberta has already benefited from two orders requiring LPS certified companies in sprinkler installations to carry out the execution of the Project.”

The LPS 1148 scheme has been prepared by an expert group drawn from installers, regulators, insurers and clients to help:

  • clients select contractors and
  • ensure that sprinkler systems are appropriate for the occupant and/or hazard class of the premises in which they are installed, and will operate reliably in the event of a fire.

Eric Michaelis, Head of Installer Certification for active fire systems for BRE Global said, “Sprinkler systems are very valuable aides to improving the safety of people and protection of property and it is imperative that they are correctly designed, installed and tested to ensure that they work properly. By achieving certification to LPS 1148 Alberta Fire & Security Equipment Limited has shown great commitment to ensuring that its design, installation, commission and servicing of Automatic Sprinkler Systems is carried out to a very high standard.”
