BRE and Local Authority Building Control sign MoU

BRE and Local Authority Building Control (LABC) have signed an MoU that will drive the development of a more efficient building control acceptance service for construction products, systems and solutions under the LABCs Registered Details scheme.

The scheme enables developers, architects, designers, technical specifiers and contractors to register or use existing design details to minimise the building control checking and approvals process. Through it manufacturers register their products and LABC measure them against the Building Regulations and judge whether, if used correctly they will comply.

Under the agreement BRE will offer their testing and certification clients a pathway to LABC Registered Detail status for their products and systems which will be recognised in over 300 building control teams.across England and Wales.

Speaking at the signing yesterday BRE Chief Executive Peter Bonfield (pictured centre) said ’BRE is pleased to support this collaboration with LABC which will speed up the process of building control in local authorities and help all those involved – a most positive development.’

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall (pictured right) added “This collaboration is important because it will enable us to drive more efficiency in the building control system. The more registered details we have the more quickly and effectively our building control can operate. It’s also a good way of pooling our knowledge base and spreading best practice more easily across the sector.  We also expect to be able to provide a range of value added services in areas such as energy efficiency, sustainability and skills training. We are pleased to work with BRE in this way.’
