BREEAM Prisons

BRE Global has developed BREEAM Prisons in association with the National Offender Management Service.  

BREEAM Prisons can be used to assess and certify the environmental impacts of new build and major refurbishments projects that form a part of one of the following types of prison establishments:
  • High security prisons; normally holding category A prisoners
  • Standard secured prison; normally holding category B and/or C prisoners
  • Young offender institutions
  • Local prisons; that receive prisoners directly from court on remand or newly sentenced
  • Women's prisons; closed prisons only

BREEAM Prisons can be used to assess either of the following building types where they form a part of one of the above types of prison establishment:

  • House/segregation block
  • Visitors centres
  • Workshop
  • Education & Training
  • Gatehouse
  • Reception building
  • Kitchen
  • Sports hall/gymnasium
  • Healthcare unit
  • Multi-faith building
  • Laundry
  • Main stores
  • Estates building
     

BREEAM Prisons falls within the family of schemes covered under the banner of BREEAM Other Buildings.  BREEAM Other Buildings provides a number of different options for assessing non-domestic buildings that fall outside the scope of the current standard UK BREEAM schemes.

BREEAM Prisons assessments can only be carried out by licensed BREEAM Other Buildings assessors
