International
BRE Global is increasingly being approached by organisations outside the UK who want to obtain the BREEAM certification on their buildings and replicate the highly successful BREEAM approach in their region or country.
BREEAM provides a holistic approach to sustainability for new and existing buildings, as well as community-scale developments. It provides a highly robust methodology to benchmark and improve the sustainability of the built environment, and is used by developers, designers and others to demonstrate the sustainability credentials of developments.
BREEAM provides:
- Market recognition for buildings and communities that achieve high standards of sustainability
- A blueprint to stimulate sustainability and innovation that brings both environmental and financial return
- A ready-made tool to help reduce running costs, improve working and living environments and make buildings more marketable
Underpinning BREEAM is scientific evidence-based research which drives its ongoing development. It has a transparent, straightforward scoring system that gives developers and others a visible roadmap to improve the performance of buildings and communities. In the international context, BREEAM has a real strength in that it is flexible and adaptable to local conditions yet can be compared from one country to another.
Who uses BREEAM?
- Clients, planners, developers and funders, who use BREEAM to specify the sustainability performance of their buildings in a way that is quick, comprehensive and visible in the marketplace.
- Property agents, who use it to promote the environmental credentials and benefits of buildings to potential purchasers and tenants.
- Design teams, who use it as a tool to improve the performance of their buildings, and their own experience and knowledge of environmental aspects of sustainability.
- Managers who use it to measure the performance of buildings and develop action plans, monitor and report performance at both single building and portfolio level.

BREEAM International Standard Schemes
Due to the demand in two significant areas of the globe, BRE Global recently launched two geographical schemes that are available for use by BREEEAM International assessors which are BREEAM Europe and BREEAM Gulf. Along side these two schemes, the BREEAM In Use and BREEAM Communities schemes are also available for use on international buildings and developments.
BRE Global is currently assessing the need for other geographical schemes to be developed.

Country Specific BREEAM Schemes
BRE Global can also provide assistance to countries (through networks such as national Green Building Councils or similar) wishing to develop their own national assessment method by developing an accredited BREEAM based system for its own circumstances.

If a building outside the UK cannot be assessed under one of the BREEAM International standard schemes mentioned above it should be assessed using the BREEAM Bespoke International assessment route.
Some multi national companies may want to rate their entire stock using the same environmental indicator (wherever in the world the buildings are located). This can also be carried out using the International Bespoke assessment route, provided no existing standards are used for the purposes of assessing those buildings. For instance, a separate BREEAM scheme was developed for all Toyota car showrooms located in Europe. This scheme is also available for use by BREEAM International assessors.
